She showed such love for him that Yama broke down in tears and declared that everyone who got a tilak on this day from their sister would live a long life.

Every year on the second day of the Diwali celebration, Bhai Dooj, also known as Yama Dwitiya, occurs. It symbolizes both safety and love, and it pays tribute to the unique relationship between brothers and sisters.  Sisters place a tikka red and pray for their brothers’ safety while brothers exchange gifts and make promises to keep their sisters safe.

Bhai Dooj is also called Yama Dwitiya due to its connection to Lord Yama, the God of Death, and his sister Yamuna. This legend, which is related on Bhai Dooj, also emphasizes the bond between siblings. According to legend, Sangya, also known as Saranyu or Saranya, was the mother of two children of the Sun God Surya Dev: a boy named Yama and a daughter named Yamuna.

Saranya gave birth to Chhaya, a woman who resembled her, because she could not withstand Surya’s heat. Once she dropped her kids off with Chhaya, she was never seen again. Because of this, the celebration is also known as Yama Dwitiya, and unique pujas are held on this day.

Bhai Dooj 2023 Rituals

.Yamuna would frequently call her brother to come see and her. The God of Death would never be able to fulfill his vow because he would always be in a state of time crunch. He made the decision to surprise his sister one day.
