Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana via video conferencing in 2020, joined by the Governor and Chief Minister of Bihar, as well as the Union Minister and MoS for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying. The government plans to invest approximately Rs. 20,050 crores in this scheme from 2020-2021 to 2024-2025. Of this total, around Rs. 12,340 crores is allocated for activities that directly benefit the beneficiaries in Marine, Inland Fisheries, and Aquaculture, while approximately Rs. 7,710 crores is designated for Fisheries Infrastructure. The primary goal of this government initiative is to-

  • Achieving a 70 lakh tonne increase in fish production by 2024-25.
  • Boosting earnings from fisheries exports to reach Rs. 1,00,000 crore.
  • Doubling the income of both fishers and fish farmers.
  • Cutting down post-harvest losses from 20-25% to around 10%.
  • Generating an extra 55 lakhs of employment opportunities in the fisheries sector and related activities, benefiting both direct and indirect employment seekers.

The goals of the Matsya Sampada Yojana cover many different things. How to apply for PMMSY Scheme

The government launched a special plan called Pradhanmantri Matsya Sampada Yojana for fishermen. The goal is to make fishing better. There are 29 good things that will be given under this plan. If you’re a fisherman, and you’re from SC, ST, or you’re a woman, the government will pay 60% of the cost to help you. For others, they’ll pay 40%.   • Beneficiaries need to go to the department’s official website and log in.
  • Then, they have to fill out a form and upload all the necessary documents.
  • The beneficiary also has to create their own SCP-DPR and submit it along with the form. Even though the cost of DPR and SCP can be more than the unit cost, the grant will be provided based on the unit cost.

  • The plan wants to make more fish, going from 137.58 lakh metric tons to 220 lakh metric tons by 2024-25.
  • It aims to make fish grow 9% faster every year.
  • The plan wants fish to become a bigger part of farming, going from 7.28% to 9% by 2024-25.
  • It wants to sell more fish to other places, going from Rs. 46,589 crores to Rs. 1,00,000 crores by 2024-25.
  • The plan wants to grow more fish in the same space, from 3 tonnes to 5 tonnes per hectare.
  • It wants less fish to get wasted, from 20-25% to about 10%.
  • The plan aims for people to eat more fish, from 5-6 kg to about 12 kg per person.
  • It plans to create jobs for about 55 lakh people in the fishing business, including making and selling fish.
